I have been holding on to this one. I don't know why it has taken me so long to write it, I have done it dozens of times in my mind.
Today is Autism Awareness Day. It's purpose is to shed some light on the concept of the disorder, and help people understand what Autism SPECTRUM means.
I find this to be beautifully poetic. It just so happens, and any of you who know my girl know this, that Emily has always had an unhealthy obsession with rainbows. Early on, her goal was to organize everything in the correct order...ROYGBIV. Everything. It then grew to loving anything with as many colors on it as possible. One year for her birthday, her favorite gift was her rainbow umbrella. I even had a rainbow MICKEY MOUSE antenna ball on my van so she could recognize me in the carpool line.

Fast forward a bit. During that fast forward, we did tons of therapies and amazing intervention programs for her education. Once we got to the end of her feeding program at the Children's Hospital in VA, they held a little "graduation" for her, as they do for every child upon completion. They make them a cape with their initial on the back, because they truly are Super Hero's. It is a beautiful moment for both the parents and the child who has worked so hard to get there.
